Review: Paleo Chocolate

I’ve found yet another reason to go back to Australia.

Sydney – My favorite city on the planet.

If y’all didn’t know, I’ve lived in Australia for a total of 18 months of my life – a pretty significant chunk if you ask me – and I absolutely adore that country. While I regretfully was unable to emigrate there (and believe me, I tried), its safe to say that I’ll be heading back there one day in the future.

And if the beautiful beaches, stunning reefs, and breathtaking Outback weren’t enough to get excited about, I’ve found one more thing to look forward to upon my return to the Land Down Under. Paleo Chocolate.

First off, I have to thank Charlie Nissen for being so kind as to send me three bars of this delicious chocolate all the way from Victoria. International shipping from Australia isn’t cheap, and I know sending food items can be a bit precarious. He saw that I was having a rough week a few weeks ago and sent me the best thing any brokenhearted girl could ever ask for: delicious, delicious chocolate.

I love chocolate, but this is one of the better recipes I’ve tried. It’s velvety smooth and melts in your mouth like fudge. The flavor is strong but not bitter, and it’s sweet without being sickly. It’s pretty addictive to say the least. I had a hard time not eating the whole bar in one sitting. Though considering the healthy ingredients, maybe that wouldn’t have been such a big deal. Apparently its raw and handmade. Maybe that extra kick of flavor in this chocolate is just all the love that went into its creation?

Speaking of ingredients, that’s one thing I must digress as part of the review. Here’s the list: organic cacao solids, organic virgin cacao butter, organic dark agave nectar, organic cacao powder, organic coconut oil, organic carob, organic cinnamon, Himalayan crystal salt. Now, before everyone starts getting their panties in a twist about the agave nectar ingredient (OMFG FRUCTOSE??), I’d like to point out that the entire 3-serving bar only has 8.7 grams of carbohydrate, and only 6.9 grams of sugar. In 3 SERVINGS. To compare, a medium-sized apple has 25 grams of carbs, 19 of those from sugar. So you’re better off chowing down on this delicious chocolate than grabbing that granny smith if you’re watching your sugar and fructose intake!

Now that said, I think a little sugar here and there for people with functional metabolisms is completely fine and nothing to get panicky about. Use your own judgment for sugar intake, but remember – a little bit of sugar won’t kill you, and there’s something to be said for enjoying life and not stressing about every single thing you put in your mouth.

So if you’re in Australia, do yourself a favor and go grab yourself a case of this chocolate-flavored crack bloody delicious chocolate as soon as you can. As for me, I just discovered that this company ships internationally… so I may need to find a friend to split shipping costs with me. Somehow I don’t think that will be a problem.

  1. I was about to get all ruffled up about the agave, but then I reminded myself that Paleo/traditional foods are about being healthy and nurturing yourself, not sticking to Rules.

    And, yeah, Paleo chocolate justifies itself.

    I live in South Korea, and all of our ‘western’ food comes from New Zealand and Australia. Grassfed beef, butter, and cheese are really easy to find here, and not terribly expensive. I would love to visit either of these countries.
