Where Does Success Start
Success doesn’t happen overnight, and the path to achieving your goals can be a rollercoaster ride… or maybe even a road trip, like Brad mentions in his story.
Brad shares that it all started when he graduated from college with a $92,000 debt. He wanted to change his situation so he gave online business a try. Late nights, podcasts, books… he tried a lot of things, but nothing seemed to work.
Until one day, he had this gut feeling and decided to max out his last credit card to hire a coach. He began to change his views about business and life, and even purchased a ticket to a conference thousands of miles away to learn more. But a few weeks leading to the event, he was fired, had no income, no savings, and still carried that massive debt.
He recalls how he arrived at the location and went to a grocery store first to buy peanut butter and jelly because he couldn’t even afford eating out at the time. He went to the event feeling unsure of himself, but it was almost serendipitous that the very topic that day was about appreciation. And that was the beginning of his transformation. The change that helped him overcome his limiting beliefs and gave him the skills to succeed faster in business and in life.
Success Starts with Gratitude
Some people may view gratitude or appreciation as an act like counting blessings in the morning, but then getting getting frustrated for the rest of the day. While that perspective isn’t entirely right or wrong, true appreciation goes beyond just momentary practice.
If we want to change our lives, we need to focus on how we feel inside, especially on whether we feel alive. And one of the most powerful emotions is appreciation. Brad explains that it’s a state of seeing life as always happening for us, and not to us. And when we start to adopt this perspective, even the greatest challenges we face becomes a gift.
Why Problems are a Good Thing
One of the biggest challenges in business and life is the belief that we shouldn’t have problems. Often, they’re associated with something negative. But Brad explains that an important mindset for succeeding faster is being able to see problems as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles that hold us back.
He briefly mentions that we have a part of our brain, called the reticular activating system (RAS), that focuses on whatever we pay attention to. Basically saying that if we keep focusing on our problems, that’s all we’ll see, even if the solution is right in front of us. We get obsessed with what’s going wrong and don’t see where we need to be.
Brad want us to remind ourselves that no matter what life gives us, it’s there for a reason. And life’s problems will only get louder and louder until we choose to listen. To succeed faster, we need to pay attention, address our problems, and learn from them.
Problems You Can’t Solve
But what about problems with no apparent solution? Situation where you can’t change anything? Brad shares that in those cases, he uses a tool called “changing the meaning.” We need to ask ourselves, “What meaning am I giving this situation?” The point is not to get rid of the pain, but we acknowledge it and find purpose in it. By giving pain meaning, we can use it as a motivation to move forward and inspire what’s next.
Reframing Beliefs to Succeed Faster
Brad wants us to reexamine our beliefs. He explains how what we believe often leads to its inevitability. For instance, believing that money is hard to make will limit our actions and keep us stuck in a cycle. However, a new story about money abundance would likely lead us to open up to possibilities and empower us to take inspired action and better results.

Brad also shares tips (expressed in a metaphor in the podcast) that could help reframe how we think:
- Set big goals that are compelling, not ones that’s based on your current limitation. Think about what achieving this goal would do for you.
- Let go of the old stories that tell you you’re further back and distort your progress.
- Surround yourself with people who are driven and appreciate every part of the journey you’re in so you can stay focused and reach your goals faster.
All these things we are experiencing right now are part of the journey, and they’re not wrong. They’re all something to appreciate. And when we start to appreciate more, we get to where we want to be faster.
