What if your mindset coaching skills, not your marketing, are the real bottleneck holding your business back?

I’m joined by Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas, a psychologist and creator of the Health Mindset Coaching Certification, to explore how building stronger coaching skills, especially around client mindset, can dramatically shift both your client results and your business outcomes.

We talk about how mindset work shows up across the board—from client retention and satisfaction, to sales call conversions, and even how you create content. Kasey shares practical insights from her own journey and explains why addressing mindset goes far beyond just “good vibes only.”

If you’ve ever felt stuck with a client who “knows what to do but just isn’t doing it,” this conversation is a must-listen.

Why “Mindset” Isn’t Just a Buzzword

Let’s start here, because I know the word mindset gets thrown around so much that it can start to sound like meaningless fluff.

But mindset isn’t just about saying affirmations or believing in yourself harder. When done right, mindset work is deeply rooted in behavioral psychology.

It’s about helping your clients understand why they keep getting stuck, and how to create internal shifts that lead to lasting transformation.

Here’s the truth: If your clients know what to do but aren’t doing it, more information isn’t the answer. Coaching their mindset is.

And the ripple effect of learning how to do this well? It touches everything—from client results and retention to your marketing messages and sales calls, even to the way you think about and show up in your business.

Let’s break down exactly how.

1. Better Mindset Coaching = Better Client Results (and Retention)

You know that client who always ghosts check-ins?

The one who swears they want to change but then falls off the wagon every other week?

Or the client who quietly disappears after their 3-month package ends—without really getting the results you know they’re capable of?

These aren’t just client problems—they’re coaching opportunities.

Why This Happens:

Most health and wellness coaches are trained in what to do (macros, movement, supplements), but not how to help clients navigate the mental roadblocks that prevent them from actually doing it.

That’s where mindset coaching skills come in.

As Kasey Jo explained, client “self-sabotage” is usually just a result of a fixed mindset, low confidence, or not knowing how to change long-standing habits.

If you don’t have the skills to help your clients work through that—beyond just saying “you’ve got this!”—they’ll continue to struggle.

What To Do Instead:

✅ Learn how to identify fixed vs. growth mindset language
✅ Ask better coaching questions instead of offering “rah rah” advice
✅ Equip clients with practical tools to navigate resistance and setbacks
✅ Coach your clients through the process of change—not just the end result

When you do this well, not only do your clients get better results—they stay longer.

You’re not constantly replacing clients. You’re retaining them, re-signing them, and even getting referrals.

Bottom line: Great mindset coaching helps your clients succeed—and that’s the most powerful marketing you’ll ever have.

2. Strong Coaching Skills Improve Your Sales Conversations

Here’s the irony: You could be a phenomenal coach, but if you can’t help a potential client believe that working with you is worth it, they’ll never buy.

Mindset coaching skills don’t just help you serve better. They also help you sell better.

Where Most Coaches Struggle:

Coaches often focus on convincing clients of the value of their offer—without helping them believe in themselves.

Kasey Jo said it best: “Most people aren’t saying no because they don’t think your program works. They’re saying no because they don’t believe they can make it work.”

And let’s be honest—your dream clients have probably already tried to fix their problem. They’ve bought courses. Followed other coaches. Tried other diets. And failed.

They’re nervous that it’s going to happen again.

And if your sales process doesn’t account for that, you’re going to hear “I need to think about it” or “I’ll start next month” way more than you want to.

How To Shift This:

Instead of just collecting data on your sales calls or applications, shift into coaching mode:

✅ Ask potential clients what they’ve tried before—and why it didn’t work
✅ Help them identify what’s keeping them stuck
✅ Reflect back their words so they feel seen and understood
Connect your offer to what matters most to them—beyond surface goals

You’re not “pushing” people to buy. You’re helping them make an empowered, confident decision—whether that’s a yes or a no.

Bonus Tip: Improve Your Application Form

Kasey Jo recommends changing your application questions from dry data collection to actual belief-building prompts.

Try questions like:

  • “What’s not working about what you’re doing now?”

  • “How would your life change if you solved this problem?”

  • “What’s stopped you in the past, and what support do you think would help most now?”

These aren’t just helpful for you. They help your prospective clients see that you’re different, and that working with you could be the thing that finally helps them break through.

3. Your Content Should Coach Too

If you’re frustrated with low engagement or feel like no one is clicking your links or applying for your program, take a look at your content strategy.

Your email address is 100% safe and will never be sent spam.

Chances are, you might be over-educating and under-coaching.

What That Looks Like:

➡️ Constantly posting tips like “Drink more water!” or “Try creatine for better performance!”
➡️ Giving away so much info that your audience thinks they don’t need to hire you
➡️ Talking at your followers instead of engaging with what they’re actually struggling with

Now don’t get me wrong, educational content still has a place.

But without addressing the mindset barriers that stop your audience from applying that education, it’s like shouting into a void.

What To Do Instead:

Here’s how to use mindset coaching principles in your marketing:

✅ Talk about the real reasons people aren’t taking action
✅ Normalize common struggles so your audience feels less broken
Offer perspective shifts that help your audience believe success is possible
✅ Share client examples where mindset was the missing piece—not just the strategy

This doesn’t mean every post has to be a mindset masterclass.

But even a single sentence like, “If you’ve struggled to stay consistent in the past, it’s not because you’re lazy—it’s because your approach didn’t support you,” can make a huge impact.

And here’s the kicker: When your content shifts someone’s mindset before they work with you, they’re more likely to convert and stick around when they do.

4. Your Own Mindset Is the Foundation of Everything

Let’s be real: This isn’t just about your clients. It’s about you too.

Because if you don’t believe in your own ability to get clients results, grow your business, or show up consistently, you’ll sabotage your own success just like a struggling client might.

This is why coaching yourself is just as important as coaching others.

Signs Your Mindset Might Be Holding You Back:

  • You avoid selling because you “don’t want to be pushy”

  • You dread check-ins or client communication

  • You doubt whether you’re actually good at coaching

  • You procrastinate on content or showing up online

As Kasey Jo said on the podcast, “Mindset is domain-specific.”

You might have a growth mindset about your health habits—but a fixed mindset about your business, sales skills, or ability to grow your client base.

And that fixed mindset can show up in subtle ways:

Waiting to promote your program until you feel “ready”
Avoiding clients who feel “hard to coach”
Comparing yourself to other coaches and spiraling into doubt

How To Shift This:

✅ Notice when your inner dialogue is limiting or rigid (“I’m just not good at sales” → “Sales is a skill I can learn”)
✅ Surround yourself with examples of what’s possible
✅ Get coached—yes, even (especially!) if you’re a coach
Reflect regularly on your wins and growth
✅ Remember: You go first

If you want your clients to commit, grow, and overcome challenges—you have to model that in your own life and business.

5. Coaching Skills Future-Proof Your Business

If the rise of AI has you a little nervous—this part’s for you.

Here’s the truth: AI can write a meal plan. AI can calculate macros. AI can even create a 6-week fitness program.

But what AI can’t do? Build trust. Ask powerful coaching questions. Hold compassionate space. Help someone work through their fear of failure. Celebrate someone’s win in a way that makes them feel deeply seen.

Those are the skills that make you irreplaceable.

And those are the mindset coaching skills you need to develop if you want to build a business that lasts.

Whether you’re coaching 1:1, leading a group, or selling an online course—your ability to coach humans through their mindset barriers is what sets you apart.
